Veto Corleone: Congress will make an offer Obama can refuse (or is it can't?)

The whole point of checks and balances is to prevent one branch of the federal government from gaining too much power over the lawmaking process.  That is why the President has the ability to, after Congress has passed a law, just say no (veto power).  There is one way Congress can fight back though, by overturning his veto.  Read (or listen to) this NPR segment about the possibility of a veto override from Congress in the next two years and answer the following questions:

1.  What are the numbers need in both the House and the Senate to override a Presidential veto?  Do you agree with the host about whether or not it will happen?
2.  Where in the Constitution is the veto override power outlined?
These last three questions require a little more research:
3.  What President has the notorious distinction of having the most vetoes overridden by Congress?
4.  Why will Obama veto any more sanctions against Iran?  Explain his reasoning.
5.  What am I referencing in the title of this post? (it's a terrible pun but I couldn't help myself)

1. The Senate would need 67 votes and the House would need 290 votes to override a presidential veto. I agree with the host that with both houses currently in control of the Republicans, that it is more likely than ever that a veto override will occur, but it will still be hard to do.
2. The power of Congress to override a veto is outlined in Article I, Section 7, Paragraph 2.
3. In US history, the President with the most vetoes overwritten is Andrew Johnson.
4. According to Obama, the world has currently isolated Iran with sanctions, which has caused negotiations with Iran to sour. Therefore, if the United States were to put even more sanctions on Iran, Obama would veto it so that the negotiations with Iran would not completely collapse.
5. Vito Corleone refers to the founder and former head of the Corleone family, which is a mafia in the movie The Godfather. Don Corleone says the famous line “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse” in this movie.

1. The House of Representatives would need 290 votes to override the presidents veto, while the senate would need 67 votes to override the veto. I do not agree with the host that it will happen because even the there is a majority in the house is Republican, you still will have the Democrats who will do all they can to not let the override occur.
2. In Article 1, Section 7, Clause 2 is where the Congress have the power to override a veto.
3. Andrew Johnson has the most vetoes that were overwritten.
4.Obama would still like to have negotiations with Iran, and he doesn't want the negotiations to completely fall off. So if in that case if Congress where to create a bill to put more sanctions on Iran he would veto it. He also believes that the world also kind of isolated Iran with the sanctions which is causing Iran to be angry.
5. You are referring to the movie The Godfather, the founder of the iconic mafia family is Vito Corleone, and one of the Corleone members say in the movie "I'm going to make him an offer he cant refuse" which ties back to what Congress is trying to do, if they override the veto then he cannot refuse it at all.

1. The House will need 290 votes to overturn the president's veto, while the senate will need 67. I do not believe that this will occur, but I think that it is more likely to happen now than a few months ago, with the republicans controlling both houses.
2. Article 1, section 7, clause 2 states that the congress has the power to overturn a veto.
3. Andrew Johnson has the most vetoes (15) to be overturned.
4. Obama would veto any sanctions against Iran to prevent a falling out between Iran and America. He does not want to lose the ability to negotiate with Iran.
5. In The God Father, Corleone says "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse." This is relevant because if Congress overturns the veto, Obama can't refuse it.

1. The House of Representatives will need 290 votes in order to overturn the veto. Due to the fact that president Obama is a Democrat, and congress is ruled by republicans, it is quite definite that this will happen.
2. The veto override power is stated in article 1, section 7, paragraph 2.
3. The president with the most overridden vetoes was president Andrew Johnson
4. In the SOTU address, President Obama exclaims that he "new sanctions passed by this Congress, at this moment in time, will all but guarantee that diplomacy fails". It's obvious that he doesn't want this to jump start a war & cause major conflict with Iran.
5. Don Corleone is a character in the God Father that says the phrase "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse" which is pretty ironic because that's exactly what's happening between congress and president Obama.

1. The House of Representatives would need 290 votes, and the Senate would need 67 votes to override the President’s veto. I agree with the host’s input that an override would be rare but plausible since it is the last 2 years of Obama’s term. It would still be difficult to obtain the ful 2/3 votes from both houses of Congress.
2. The power of Congress to override a Presidential veto is in Article I, Section 7, Paragraph 2.
3. Andrew Johnson is the president with the most vetoes being overwritten.
4. President Obama wants to be able to have negotiations with Iran, so if more sanctions were to be put on Iran, negotiations would be difficult. Since nuclear talks have been important, President Obama values the negotiations with Iran.
5. The title is from the movie the Godfather where the quote “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse” is said. This is relevant since Congress has the ability to override President Obama (the offer he can’t refuse), making the situations parallel.

1. The House of Representatives would need 290, while the Senate would need 67. I agree with the host in that it would be difficult but possible, since it would require a large amount of votes from both houses of congress. It is possible I think because congress is predominantly republican, who typically oppose democratic decisions, like such made by our democratic President.
2. Article I, section 7, clause 2.
3. Andrew Johnson’s vetoes were overridden more often than any other president in the United States.
4. President Obama opposed future sanctions against Iran because he would like negotiations to take place, with hopes that negotiations will suppress conflict with Iran.
5. Vito Corleone played in the movie, “The Godfather”, where there is a quote saying, “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse”. Very punny.

1.) Senate needs 67 votes and the House needs 290 votes to override a Presidential veto. I don’t think it will happen. Fawn Johnson said, it doesn’t happen very often and the last two vetoes President Obama have used were sustained.
2.) The veto power is outlined in Article 1, Section 7, Paragraph 2.
3.) Andrew Johnson had the most vetoes in history.
4.) President Obama will veto any more sanctions against Iran because they will jeopardize the relations that America has with Iran. If America does choose to go forward with sanctions against Iran, the relationship that we have with Iran will completely dissolve.
5.) Corleone refers to the Don Corleone, a character in The Godfather, who says “I’m going to make an offer he can’t refuse” , which is ironic because if the House and Senate veto President Obama, he cannot refuse it.

1. The House requires 290 votes, while the Senate needs 67 to override a veto. I don't think that this is possible, as it is a very difficult thing to do and it requires a large amount of votes to actually override the veto.

2. Article I, Section 7, Clause 2 states that Congress has the power to override a veto.

3. Andrew Johnson has the highest number of vetoes overridden out of all the presidents so far.

4. Obama will veto further sanctions since they've worked so hard to be able to negotiate with Iran, and any further actions may denature any former negotiations and put it all to waste. Therefore he will veto the sanctions in order to maintain a sense of stability in the Iran relationship.

5. The Godfather has a character named Vito, or Don Corleone. Haven't seen the movie yet though I do own all three...

1. The House of Representatives needs 67 votes while the Senate would need 290 in order to override the presidential veto. I agree with the host. Although an override is rare, it is still possible.
2. In Article I, Section 7, clause 2, the Congress is able to override a Presidential veto.
3. Presidential Andrew Johnson was known to have most of his vetoes overridden.
4. Obama will veto any more sanctions against Iran because it will destroy the negotiations that were made between him and the President of Iran, Hassan Rouhani. If the relationship breaks, there would be even more tension between America and Iran since nuclear weapons will be involved.
5 lol. This is from the movie "The Godfather" when Vito was like "I'm gonna made him an offer he can't refuse." and this is so punny because Congress can override the President and the President can't refuse.

1. For the Senate to override a Presidential veto, they would need 67 votes to make this happen and the House would need 290 votes to override the veto. I do agree with the host, I think the veto will be override, because there is a representation of majority of Republicans in both houses, but at the same time it still will be hard to accomplish.
2. Article I, Section 7,Clause 2 outlines veto override power.
3. The President that is known for having the most vetoes overridden by Congress is Andrew Jackson.
4. The reason Obama will veto any more sanctions against Iran is to stop any conflict between Iran and America.
5. The reference comes from The God Father, where the quote from Corleone says "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse", this is ironic because President Obama can't refuse the bill if congress overrides the veto.

1. 2/3 of both the House Representatives and Senators must vote to override a presidential veto—290 House votes and 67 Senate votes. 246 Republicans currently hold House seats and 54 Republicans hold Senate seats. Because of this discrepancy between the number of seats needed for a veto and the number that Republicans hold, I believe it is unlikely that veto overrides will take place in Congress, especially considering the lack of bipartisanship between parties and the internal squabbling within the Republican party.
2. Veto override power is outlined in Article I, Section 7, Clause 2 of the Constitution.
3. Andrew Johnson—the Democratic Vice President under Abraham Lincoln who came to power after Lincoln's assassination—dealt with the most veto overrides under a Republican Congress.
4. The United States is currently in talks with Iran regarding their nuclear program. Iran wishes to use nuclear power for energy purposes, but many people—including a good number of politicians—believe that Iran wants to create a nuclear bomb. The President has been negotiating with Iran to decrease sanctions on Iran if they come to a deal with the U.S. Republicans in Congress wish to increase sanctions on Iran, however, which would effectively kill any negotiations or leverage that the White House has with Tehran, so Obama will veto any sanctions that Congress passes in order to avoid botching negotiations.
5. You're referring to Don Corleone's "The Godfather" quote, "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse," in reference to Don Corleone telling Johnny Fontane that he'll help him revive his career by giving a studio head an offer that, allegedly, can't be refused.

1. House needs 290 votes and Senate needs 54 votes. In my opinion, it could happen but it would be difficult because every single republican would have to vote for it to occur in the house and senate, which is not entirely likely.
2. Article I section 7 clause 2
3. Andrew Johnson had the most vetoes overridden
4. Vetoing sanctions would cause America and Iran to have an alliance. Consulting with one another builds their trust and closer ties. If the Sanction’s weren’t vetoed, it would ruin the countries ties.
5. In The Godfather, Corleone says, “I’m going to make an offer he can’t refuse”. This references to the house and senate vetoing the president, which is punny because it is “an offer he can’t refuse”.

1.) The house would need 290 votes in unison and the senate 67 which is a 2/3 majority in both houses. I agree that there is a possibility of that happening as republicans currently hold both houses however it may be difficult to turn over the needed democrats.
2.) Article 1, Section 7, Clause 2 outlines the veto override power.
3.) Andrew Johnson had the most vetoes overridden by congress.
4.) Obama wants to keep negotiations with Iran opened. Therefore, he does not want more sanctions put in Iran.

1. 290 votes in the House and 67 votes in the Senate are needed to override a Presidential vote. I agree with the host that it is difficult, but possible for a veto override to occur over the next two years as the President is a Democrat and both houses of Congress are dominated by Republicans.
2. In Article 1, Section 7, Clause 2, the Constitution outlines the veto override power.
3. President Andrew Johnson has the most vetoes ever overridden by Congress.
4. If President Obama puts more sanctions against Iran, positive negotiations with their leaders would not be able to occur. The relationship between the two countries would fail. President Obama ultimately hopes to come to some sort of negotiation with Iranian leaders, so he is intent on vetoing any bill that may increase any sanctions with them.
5. In the movie The Godfather, Don Corleone says “I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse". If Congress overrides President Obama’s veto, he can’t refuse.

3) Andrew Johnson has the notorious distinction of having the most vetoes overridden by congress.
4) Obama will veto any more sanctions against Iran because that will end up hurting the relationship with Iran. So if the US decided to put more sanctions on Iran, Obama will quickly veto it because he doesn't want to initiate any conflicts with Iran.

1. The Senate would need 67 votes and the House would need 290 votes to override a presidential veto. Being that president Obama is Democratic, i do agree with the host that since both houses are currently in control of the republicans, an override on a veto will likely occur.

2. The power for Congress to override a veto is outlined in Article I, Section 7, Paragraph 2.

3. The president that has the notorious distinction of having the most vetoes overridden by congress is Andrew Johnson.

4. Obama would veto any sanctions against Iran mainly to prevent a collapse between Iran and America. Obama doesn't want to continue isolating Iran with sanctions.

5. In The God Father, Vito Corleone is the leader of the Corleone family. Corleone says "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse." This is a perfect reference to the tile of this post because if the Congress overturns the veto with enough votes, Obama will not be able to refuse it.

1.) In order to override the president’s veto, the senate needs 67 votes and the House of Representatives need 290 votes. I do not think that the representatives will override the veto in consideration of the fact that this will arise too much negative attention on the republicans for not being able to follow the respectable right of the president’s vetoing power. But they may do it. Anything is possible; there was even a government shutdown so its not completely out of the question.
2.) Article 1, Section 7, Paragraph 2 outlines the congress’s’ overriding a veto power.
3.) Andrew Johnson, having 15 vetoes overridden, has had the most vetoes overridden. (He was impeached though, and hostility was more severe at this time)
4.) President Obama believes in solving foreign affair issues by peaceful negotiation, and putting more sanctions on Iran will only agitate an already existing hostility and hatred for the American government from Iran. John Kerry has also made several negations with Iran that would allow the U.S. to control the nuclear threat that America is facing with Iran, and creating more sanctions would only encourage them to further develop their nuclear endeavors.
5.) This would be from “The Godfather”. Don Corleone says, “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse”.

1. The House would require 290 votes and the Senate would need 67 votes to override a Presidential veto. I agree with the facts that show it is unlikely and rare to see a Presidential veto overridden. However, with both the houses being Republican controlled, the chances of the veto’s override has gone up.
2. The veto override power is outlined in Article I, Section 7, Clause 2.
3. The president with the most vetoes overridden by Congress is Andrew Johnson.
4. Obama does not want the tension to rise against Iran as he would like to continue to have the ability to negotiate. If more sanctions were placed on Iran, the power to negotiate would dwindle and he does not want to start a war.
5. Veto Corleone is referring to Don Corleone, a mobster from The Godfather. He is most famous for the line, “I'm gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.” In comparison with President Obama, if Congress overrides his veto, he cannot refuse it due to our checks and balances system.

3.) Andrew Johnson had the most vetoes overturned in US History.

4.) Obama will veto any sanction against Iran because the relationship between the US and Iran is already stressed, and he doesn't want to hurt the already tense relationship.

1. The numbers needed in the House would be 290 votes to override the president’s veto, while the Senate would only need 67 votes to override the veto. I do not agree with the host just because of the fact that the republicans are in control of both houses that is less likely to happen.
2.This is outlined in the constitution in Article 1, Section 7, and Clause 2
3. The president that had the most overridden vetoes was Andrew Johnson.
4. President Obama warned congress not to pursue new sanctions on Iran saying they could derail the effort to strike a deal barring the country from getting a nuclear weapon. He also confirmed he has even warned congressional Democrats, some that do support a new sanctions bill, that he would veto that legislation.

with only 67 votes needed to overturn the President's veto and the Senate and 290 votes in the House of Representatives I think it is very likely for but the over ruling on veto to be quite possible due to the fact that it is now a Republican controlled government. It says the Constitution of as an power the Congress has to stop a presidential ruling it's clearly stated in article 1 section 7 clause 2. The president that has the most vetoes overturned by Congress is former President Andrew Johnson. President Obama will veto any further sections against Iran because they are somewhat already cooperating and he does not want to hold them at more then they already agreed to.
