It’s ironic mostly because of it’s informality within a system so overridden with formalities, but there is also a faint fraternal ritual within it, whereby new members are near hazed, that I can’t help but laugh at. Not only do new congressmen often find themselves with the least desirable of committee appointments — something somewhat justifiable by their inexperience — they also are made to jump through hoops to get them. However, although whimsically sickening, the process does teach a new Congressmen the pros of making favorable deals and how to approach and become friendly with leaders of Congress. The most successful, then, are rewarded with meaningful committee assignments that help please both their own agendas and the agendas of their constituents.
At the post-I-won-the-election orientation for Congressmen, several things take place.
